WEEKLY HISTORY

Week 13 - Aug 16th - PLAYOFFS!!

We had a great week of IMS this week as the playoffs are here and we had two great match ups for the playoffs.

This week we will start on the lower Doyon Field where we had #3 IFS taking on #2 SCL for the right to go to the championship.  The first game was back and forth all game but it was a big third inning by SCL that pushed them a head and they didn't look back winning the game 13-9.  Leading hitters for SCL were Tim Galanis who went 4-4 and Mike Santiano who went 2-4 HR.  Leading hitters for IFS were Jarred Graham who went 3-4 and Dick Merry who went 4-4.

In the second game of the best of three IFS kept SCL close for most of the game but then in the 6th SCL opened up the game with a 7 run outburst.  That all but did it for IFS as they loose the game and their season comes to an end 14-5.  Leading hitter for SCL was Charlie who went 4-4.  Leading hitter for IFS was Blake who went 3-3.

So we now go to the upper Doyon Field to find out who will be playing SCL in the Championship game next week.

On the upper Doyon Field we had the #4 Panini playing the #1 RVA.  In game one it was a back and forth game but a big 4th inning by RVA did in Panini.  Panini would try to come back but RVA would hold on for the 20-7 win.  Leading hitter for RVA was Dave Moore who went 4-4.  Leading hitter Jeff Putur who went 3-3.

In game 2 of the best of three Panini try to get out ahead of RVA by scoring 4 in the first.  But RVA would come back and score 3 in the second, 5 in the 3rd and 4 in the fourth.  But there was no quit in Panini on this day.  Panini chipped away at the lead even while RVA tried to continue to increase it.  RVA had a 10 run lead going into the bottom of the 7th, but the Pizza makers wouldn't go quietly on this day, scoring 10 runs before an out was even recorded to tie the game.  RVA would get out of the inning to send the game into extras.  RVA would strand a runner on 2nd in the top half of the 8th. Panini however would not let this one slip away and put a couple people on and score the one run they needed to win Game 2 19-18.  Leading hitter for RVA was 4-5 with a HR.  Leading hitters for Panini were Kane who went 4-4 and Patrick Kelley who went 3-3 with the game winning walk off hit.

So it came down to a winner take all Game 3.  This game had all the energy of the second game a game that went back and forth all game.  After leading 10-7 in the bottom of the 6th RVA would tie the game.  So it came down to a 10-10 game at the start of the 7th.  Panini’s bats came alive again with some more late innings magic scoring 6 runs in the 7th and held onto the lead only letting RVA score 1 run in the bottom of the 7th to hold onto the game and advance to the championship.  Leading hitter for RVA was Craig Duprey who went 3-3.  Leading hitters for Panini were Carlos Lahr who went 4-5 with a HR and Greg Williams who went 2-4 with a HR.

The match for next weeks championship will be #2 SCL vs. #4 Panini.

Playoff Schedule -

Playoff Matchups for next week look like this

#4 Panini vs. #1 RVA - Doyon 1

#3 IFS vs. #2 SCL - Steven Grimes (Lower Doyon Field)

Remember these are best two out of three, so there is a chance you could play 3 games this week

Week 12 - Aug 9th

In the final week of the regular season we had two match-ups the decided the playoff picture.

First on the Doyon 1 we had The bankers vs. Panini.  Panini started out fast and never looked back.  Panini picked 10 in the first and never looked back.  While the Bankers tried to mount a comeback they could never cut the lead down.  Panini won the first game 22-13.  The leading hitter for Panini was Kane who went 3-4 and continued his hot hitting with 2 more homers.  Leading hitter for the Bankers was Winters who went 3-4.

In a game that Panini needed to win and win by a lot they started off slow giving up 9 runs in the first.  The bankers needed to hold on to the lead and did.  But Panini made it interesting pulling within 4 but could not come all the way back.  The bankers win 18-14, and with that grab the #3 seed in next weeks playoffs dropping Panini to #4.  Leading hitters for Panini was Carlos who went 2-4 with a homer.  Leading hitter was Scott Garand who went 5-5.

On the lower field we had a battle for first between RVA and SCL.  SCL had to win both games and got started early.  scoring 2 in the first and 3 in the second.  RVA tried to battle back but SCL kept putting up runs.  The game went back and forth but it was SCL taking the first game.  16-13.  Leading hitters SCL Mike Santiano who went 4-5 with 3 homers and Charlie who went 4-4 hitting for the cycle.  Leading hitter for RVA was Dave Moore who went 4-5 with a homer.

In the second game RVA put a couple of runs up but then gave up the lead right in the bottom of the first as SCL scored 8 in the first.  This game went back and forth at one time it was tied at 10. SCL took a hold of the game and won the second game as well, unfortunately it was not by enough runs to earn the tie break from RVA.  This means the RVA will be the top seed of our playoffs with SCL as the #2 seed.  Leading hitter for SCL was Tim Galanis who went 4-5.  Leading hitters for RVA were Brad Eaton who was 4-5 HR, and Dave Moore who was 4-5 HR.

Week 11 - August 2nd

With two weeks to go in the regular season the Ipswich Men’s Softball is heating up.  On the upper Doyon Field we had a battle between 2nd and 3rd that was two great games of back and forth softball between Panini and SCL.  In a game where SCL jumped out to a 4-0 lead Panini battled back and scored 7 in the second.  But SCL battled back to tie the game going into the 5th only to see Panini have an 11 run outburst.  Just when you thought Panini had grabbed the game SCL come back with 6 in the bottom half of the inning.  Panini tried to pull away with three more in the 6th.  But SCL scored 4 in the bottom of the 6th and then held Panini to none in the 7th but were still trailing by 4 runs.  But it wasn't Panini’s game to have as SCL walked off with the win off a Gino home run, 23-22.  Leading hitters for Panini were Mark Hardie who went 3-4 with a Grand Slam and Greg Williams and Patrick Kelley both going 3-3.  Leading hitters for SCL were Gino, 4-5 with a HR, Mike Santiano 3-5 with a HR and Charlie 4-4 with a HR.

The second game was much of the same back and forth. It was Panini that had to keep battling back in this one how ever. But going into the bottom half of the 6th Panini was trailing by 2.  But Panini battled to scored 4 to take the lead by two.  It looked like SCL was going to pull off another come back but it wasn't meant to be as Panini was able to shut them down to take a win.  Leading hitter for Panini was Kane who went 3-3 with 2 HRs.  Leading hitter for SCL was Steve D. who went 2-4 with a HR.

On the lower Doyon field it was a battle of 1st and 3rd.  IFS took on RVA.  RVA jumped out to an early lead and scored in almost ever inning.  IFS scored 3 in the 2nd and 6 in the 5th.  But RVA held them off to win 14-11.  Leading hitters for IFS Jimmy show went 3-3 and Higgins who went 1-4 with that one hit being a HR.

In game 2 IFS jumped out to the early lead but RVA chipped away by shutting IFS down in the middle innings.  RVA scored 4 in the first after giving up 7, 6 in the 2nd and 5 in the third and held IFS to no runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings to take game two as well 16-13.  Leading hitter was Scott Garand who went 4-4.

Week 8 - July 12th

After 3 weeks off Ipswich Mens softball got back out on the field.  On the top field was RVA vs. IFS.  In a battle of current 2nd and 3rd place teams.  RVA won the first game 19-10.  The completed the sweep beating IFS 21-6 in the second game.

On the lower field was a battle of current 1st and 4th place teams between SCL and Panini.  SCL took the first game 18-9.  Big swing was ball that was lost in the sun by Sweets that turned into a grand slam.  But in the second game Panini playing with 9 guys kept SCL close all game and went into the top of the 7th down 3 runs. Panini would score the three and hold off SCL who had a runner on third with two outs in the bottom half to send the games into extras.  Panini scored in the top of the 8th and held off SCL for the win.

Standings will be updated later on.  Wall of shame and HR board will be updated for Panini and SCL tonight.

See you all next week.

Week 4 - June 7th

The heart of the Ipswich Mens Softball League season is heating up.

To start this week we saw something that I dont think we have seen in IMSL history.  A continuation of games from the previous week.

First Rowley Veterans and SCL Home Services finished up a game that saw SCL down big to start.  Picking up a game that was delayed in the top of the 5th due to rain that saw RVA up 13-2 over the undefeated team in the league.  Even though it was a nicer day yesterday SCL could not come back from the deficit and RVA handed SCL their first loss of the year.

Down on the back field Institution For Savings and Panini Pizzeria picked up their game that was rained out also in the fourth.  Panini was up 8-4 to start this game.  With the nicer weather this game was quick to finish.  While Panini held off the bankers in the 5th and the 6th only allowing them to score twice.  Panini almost gave them back the game in the 7th where they let the score three runs but it was that fourth run that the bankers could not get and Panini was able to hold them off for their second win of the season.

Now to the regular weeks play:

On the top field we saw a battle between the Bankers and SCL.   While both teams failed to score in the first it was the Bankers who started the scoring off in the second scoring four runs on some hitting from the bottom of their lineup.  The lead didn't last long however as SCL came back with 8 in the top half of the third behind a Grand Slam from Tim Galanis.  The Bankers would be come right back with five in the 3rd, five in the 4th and five in the 5th to take a commanding lead that SCL couldn't fight back from.  SCL would drop its second game of the season 21-9.  Leading hitter for SCL was Tim Galanis who was 3-4 with a Grand Slam.  Leading hitter for the Institution for Savings was Christian Scourletis who went 4-4.

In the second game SCL and the Bankers wouldn't wait to start scoring as the Bankers scored 2 to open the game but were topped in the bottom half as SCL scored 4.  The Bankers would continue the scoring scoreing in ever inning up to the 5th and held SCL to only one run.  Leading 8-5 in the 5th SCL got the bats going again and battled back scoring 4 to take the lead.  They were able to hold off the Bankers to hang on to this one 11-8.  Leading hitter for SCL was Eric Forisso who was 1-3 with a HR.  Leading hitter for the Bankers Kevin Winter who went 3-4 and was a HR shy of the cycle.

On the back field we saw a couple of great games where that took to till the seventh inning to see a winner.  In the first game between the Rowley Vets and Panini Pizzeria both teams got the scoring off early, with each team scoring in the first.  But the scoring went back and fourth.  RVA would score in every inning except the 5th and the 7th.  Panini was held from scoring in the second but scored every inning after that.  Finding them selves down three in bottom of the 7th Panini scored 2 of the three needed but could complete the come back and fell 13-12. Leading hitters for Panini were Carlos Lahr who went 2-4 with a HR and Dave Breen who went 3-4.  Leading hitters for RVA was Brad Eaton, Paul James and Dominic Baraiolo who all hit HR for RVA.

In the second game Panini start the scoring early scoring five runs in the first.  But a rough second inning saw RVA score 9 against Panini.  But Panini would fight back holding RVA to one run over the next four innings.  While Panini would take the lead 12-10.  Going into the bottom of the seventh.  However RVA would fight back and score the three runs needed to pull off the come back.  Leading hitters for Panini Pizzeria were Carlos Lahr who was 4-4 and a HR shy of the cycle and Patrick Kelley who was 3-4.  Leading hitter for RVA was Nate Ingalls who went 3-4.

Week 3 - May 31th

We had two great matchup on the diamond this week in the Ipswich Men’s Softball league.

On Doyon 1 field we had a match up of the Rowley Vets and SCL.  Both teams started off grabbing a run in the first.  After grabbing a few runs in the top of the third the Vets battled back and scored seven runs to take a eight to four lead.  But that wouldn't last long as SCL put up six in the fourth.  SCL would put up one more in the seventh and hold off the Vets to win 11-8.  Leading hitters for SCL were Tim Galanis who went 2-3, 2HR and Mike Santiano who went 4-4, HR.  Leading hitter for the Vets was Jamie Morley who went 1-3, HR.

On the Grimes field we had a battle between Institution for Savings and Panini Pizzeria.  Both teams jumped out and scored two runs in the first inning.  The bankers extended their lead in the third by scoring eight runs.  Panini tried to come back by scoring three in the fourth but the bankers match them.  Panini then scored four in the fifth but could not hold off the bankers in the bottom of the sixth as the bankers scored four more.  That was enough to hold off Panini as the bankers take this one 18-9.  Leading hitters for Panini were Jeff Putur who went 3-3, 2 2B and Kane Mosteller who also went 3-3.  Due to weather the book for the bankers was not picked up.

All four teams started their second game of the day, but due to the weather both were put in a rain delay.  Both games will start where they left off to start next week.  We will finish those games and then play the normal double header of the week.

Week 2 - May 17th

Another great week in Ipswich Men’s Softball after a week of for Mother’s Day.

On Doyon 1 we had Rowley Veteran’s Association played against Institute for Savings.  RVA jumped out to take an early lead in the first and never gave up  the lead scoring in the first four innings.  IFS opened their scoring in the fourth scoring four to cut the lead down but could never quite finish the climb back to settling the score. RVA ends up winning this one 11-7.  Leading hitter for RVA was Brad Eaton with 2 HRs.

In the second game it looked like RVA was going to run away with it again.  Scoring four in the first and two in the third. How-ever the bankers had their say in this one, scoring four runs in the second and third and scoring in every inning but the first, including a seven run fifth inning.  The bankers take the second game 20-7.

On the lower field at Doyon was the battle Panini Pizzeria and the SCL Home Services.  Panini jumped out in front of the first place team quickly scoring 3 runs in the first.  But in the second SCL opened up their scoring batting around and putting up ten runs on the pizza shop.  Panini answered back with three more runs but SCL kept their foot on the pedal scoring in every inning after that.  SCL took game 1 22-10.  Leading hitter for SCL was Tim Galanis who was a triple short of the cycle. Leading hitter for Panini was once again Carlos Lahr.

It was a reverse of week one for Panini, as their bats failed to show up in the second game.  Scot Morrison keep Panini off balance holding Panini to only two runs on ten hits.  SCL’s crushing of the ball continued as they scored seven runs in the first and second only to match that total in the fifth alone.  SCL used for the first time in League history the newly created Game 2 Mercy rule winning this one 17-2.  While Mikey P. Sweets went 2-2 that he also dropped two balls that cost his team a couple of runs.  Leading hitters for SCL, the entire team.

The league is off next week for Memorial Day.  We would like to say Thank You to all who served.

Week 1 - May 3rd

Sunday May 3rd was opening day for the Ipswich Mens Softball league and it opened with some great ball played on both fields.

On Doyon 1 we had SCL Home Services against Institute for Savings.  SCL shut down the bankers in the first and opened the scoring up in the bottom half of the inning by scoring three.  SCL continued the scoring in the third and the fourth when the bankers tried to start a rally in the fourth but came up short falling to the bankers 16-5.  Winning pitcher for SCL was Gino.  Leading hitters for SCL where Eric Forisso and Tim Galanis going 2-3 and 4-4 respectively both with home runs.  Leading hitters for the bankers were Brian Story and Jim Praplaski both going 2-3.

In the second game the bankers got out the fast start scoring four in the bottom of the first but a late rally by SCL was strong and the bankers could never recover.  Scoring six in the fifth and three in the sixth for a 11-6 final.  Winning pitcher for SCL was Scot Morrison.  Leading hitters were Tim Galanis, Eric Forisso and Scot Morrison all going 3-4.  Leading hitters for the bankers were Scott Garand going 3-4 and Dick Merry going 2-4 with a home run.

On the lower field at Doyon was the battle of our two new sponsors between Panini Pizzeria and the Rowley Veterans Association.  The Vets jumped out early and never looked back in game one as Panini could never get the bats going, final score 9-4.  Leading hitter for the Vets was Dave Moore going 4-4  and the winning pitcher was Craig Duprey.  Leading hitter for Panini Pizzeria was Patrick Kelley 2-3.

In the second game of the day Panini’s bats came alive as the scored five in the first but they were not to be out done by the Vets as they matched those five runs.  Panini however kept the scoring going by adding two in the second and three in the third.  Panini’s defense held the Vets down through the end of the game give them a 15-10 victory.  Winning pitcher was Mike Dupray.  Leading hitters for Panini were Jeff Putur going 3-5 and Carlos Lahr going 3-4.  Leading hitters for the Vets were Barry and Brad Eaton both going 3-4.

The league is off next week for Mother’s Day.  We would like to wish all the mothers out there a Happy Mother’s Day.
